I felt very bad for this guy - he must have lost 200 - 300 places as he stopped to fix a puncture. Having said that, he must have set a world record for the quickest repair ever!
In his hand you can see a can of compressed air he is using to reinflate the tyre.

SO it was like a pit stop for him
Exactly Navin, I am sure he would have liked a team to help him out though.
Where's his support car?!?
He wasn't in the pro group - only the pro cyclists had support cars. He had to fend for himself I am afraid.
Looks upset!!
Nothing worse than being totally fit, totally prepared and then having to deal with something like this to put you out of contention in an instant. I feel for him.
Very nice. Well not so nice perhaps for him.
What a bummer...nice shot though.
That's me in the photo man. It wasn't so bad at the time as punctures happened. What was bad was the third puncture I got that forced me to walk for half an hour to the next repair station as I ran out of spare tubes. Still finished in 04h05. Tough luck.
Thanks for stopping by :) If you would like a copy of the image then let me know - I have several more. I was the guy snapping away pestering you by the masque theater, not sure if you remember.
Cheers,
Craig
Nice one JD, so you finally got your fame... pity the circumstances :-) well at least it gave me the gap to beat you...
I do remember you snapping away, it would be much appreciated if you could mail some pics. At least now my mates also believe me : ). How did you get in contact with Peter Retief?
