Digital Camera Glossary - Exposure Compensation

A camera’s auto functioning will set lighting for a shot based on an average reading. If the target subject is much lighter or darker, it may come out under- or over-exposed. Most cameras allow the photographer to override the auto function and set lighting and exposure settings themselves.
